I am becoming a second year graduate student in socio-cultural anthropology in fall 2008. I completed my B.A. in political science and journalism at Sogang University and my M.A. in the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. I have not fully decided on my dissertation project yet, but I am currently thinking to research the compulsory military service of early study abroad (chogi yuhak) Korean male students at American universities. Given their desire to be global citizens, I expect to study how they navigate and negotiate the two very different realities: global desire and the epitome of being a of Korean national subject. Beyond the project, I have been broadly interested in globalization, nationalism, migration, identity, and ethnicity; and I have burgeoning interests in youth culture and Korean education.
