Josie Sohn
I am a doctoral student in East Asian Languages and Cultures and Cinema Studies. I completed my undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature and East Asian Languages at the University of California, Los Angeles, during which I inadvertently attempted to resolve my 1.5 immigrant generation identity crisis by spending more time on managing my then-popular fansite of a Japanese (non-Korean/American, to say the least) graphic novel than going to my "south campus" (aka non-humanities) classes. My dissertation focus mirrors my fascination with (audio-)visual culture, real/virtual fandom, and transnational circulation of popular culture in the context of ever-lurking presence of nationalism. In 2008-9, I have received a Fulbright grant to delve into the curious coexistence of nationalist film culture as reflected in South Korean news media and the ever-increasing transnational film production by looking at various sites of film reception such as college film club, film magazines, and "international" film festivals.
